WHAT is Geocaching?
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt game. Partcipants search for hidden caches using the latitude and longitude coordinates that have been entered
into their GPS (Global Positioning System) unit. While it may sound easy, geocaching can be challenging as participants have to solve riddles, follow
compass directions and search for clues before finding the cache.
What is a Cache?
Pronounced "cash" - Caches were often used by explorers, miners, etc. to hide foodstuffs and other items for emergency purposes. People still hide caches
of supplies today for similar reasons. In geocaching they are containers of varied sizes and shapes, some containing special treasures, hidden in inconspicuous places.
Cherry Crest Adventure Farm Caches
Cherry Crest Adventure Farm (CCAF) geo caches come in three forms and are marked on the inside game sheet with the symbols below:
 |
The most common caches at CCAF, these caches are large plastic
containers about the size of a brick. They contain cache information
as well as a colored bead symbolizing a critical part of farm
life here at CCAF. |
 |
A small capsule cache about two inches long. Difficult to find
because of its size and because it is often attached to a hidden piece
of metal. They contain the clue to find the large bead cache nearby. |
 |
A cache that is virtually not there, but has information to help
participants answer special clue questions. |
Difficulty Levels
Cherry Crest Adventure Farm geocaches all have varying
difficulty levels and are marked on the inside game sheet with
the numbers below:
 |
Easy - close walking distance on flat terrain. |
 |
Moderate - longer walking distance on flat terrain. |
 |
Challenging - longest walking distance (1/4 -1/2
mile from starting point) may include rougher
terrain such as a hill or dirt path. |
Muggles
A non-geocacher. Based on "Muggle" from the Harry Potter series,
geocachers have to be careful not to let Muggles see them retrieve
a cache. Otherwise, these curious people may go explore the
cache for themselves and ruin the game by opening the cache, not
returning it to the proper place, or taking it with them.
GPS
GPS stands for Global Positioning System. It is a system of satellites
that work with a GPS receiver to determine your location on the
planet.
Stealth
Geocaching requires participants to be aware that "Muggles" may
be nearby and therefore must be sly about finding a cache without
calling any attention to themselves.
