The 2006 Sweet Corn Festival

Corn Stalk Tower Building Contest

This fun event was huge success for its first year running. The challenge of the competition was to take 5 bundles of corn stalks and build something creative. Much to our surprise, groups took this very challenge very seriously; some groups spent over 2 hours working on their structure!! Although originally prizes were only going to be awarded for the Tallest Tower & the Most Creative Tower, the judges decided that more prizes were needed due to the hard work and creative efforts of our participants. 6 prizes were awarded.

Tallest & Best of Show
The Corn Dog Cabana - Built by Team Corn Stalk

Best Structure
The Chair - Built by The Wheeler Family

The Most Creative
The Train - Built by The Tie Dyes

Thinking Outside the
Box Award

Croc. - Built by the Tomasuras

Most Amazing Structure
Maize The Corn Dog - Built by Team Crouse

Best Last Ditch Effort*
The Fallen Tower - Built by
the Breeden's

* The Breeden's team started their tower with less than an hour left on the clock. Once constructed, it was the tallest tower, surpassing the height of the Corn Dog Cabana. However, due to a slight breeze that day, the tower began to lean and then finally collapsed, just shortly before the judging could begin. There was not enough time for the Breeden's to restore their tower.

We are looking forward to an even more competitive year in 2007!

Other Activities

The Corn Toss
Free throughout the day, families could challenge each other to the classic game of corn toss. The goal of the game is to put the bean bags through the holes on the corn board. Team with the highest points wins.

Corn Eating Contest
Kids & adults alike loved this fun competition. The first person to devour one ear of sweet corn was declared the winner! In, fact we had so many adults sign up that we had to add additional heats at the last minute. "No skippers allowed," our announcer & judge, Joel was a sticker for making sure every last kernel of corn was eaten!

Tony The Tiger
In honor of his role in our 2006 maze, we invited Tony the Tiger to this special event. Tony was GRRREAT at greeting our guests and making everyone feel welcome!

Corn, Corn, & More Corn
As part of our sweet corn festival, each person was given one free ear of freshly roasted sweet corn. Our corn roaster has never been put to such good use!

Steven Courtney Concert
Included with admission on this festive day was a concert by none other than the Steven Courtney Band. Both the kids and adults were clapping, singing and even dancing along with this band's fun tunes. It was a great way to wrap up a day of excellent food, energetic competitions and fun activities.
